Introduction and History in Brief

The main deity Sri Prasanna Krishnaswamy as a new born baby, the idol made of Saligrama stone and with a dancing pose is an eye catching feature. All deities in this temple have separate Prakarams.  The temple also has a dedicated Paakashaala, Yaagashala, Kalyana Mantapam, exclusive space for Kannadi Arai (Mirror room), Thiru Kalyani.

The temple features most importantly Poorva Aacharyaas namely a few Sri Vishwaksenar, Sri Ramanujacharya, Sri Nammalwar, Sri Kaleyan, Sri Vedantha Deshikar, Sri Aadivan Shatakopar, and Sri Thillasthana Swamy. The thirunakshatrams (Birthday) of all Aacharyaas is celebrated regularly.

Speciality of the temple: – Of the Dasha Avathara of Lord Sri Mahavishnu, this temple has deities of the 4 Maha Avataras  namely Sri Prasanna Krishnaswamy representing SRI KRISHNA AVATAARA of Dwapara Yuga, Sri Lakshmi Nrusimha representing SRI NRUSIMHA of Krita Yuga, Lord Sri Rama representing SRI RAMA AVATAARA of Tretha Yuga and Sri Venkateshwara i.e. SREENIVAASA of the Present Kaliyuga.

Nitya Aradhana (Daily Pooja) is carried out according to Paancharaatra Aagama. Some of the important sevas in this temple are, Rathothsavam, Ramothsavam, Pavithrothsavam, Shree Jayanthi, Narasimha Jayanthi, Purattasi Maasa Pooja, Thiru Adhyayanothsavam, Vishnu Deepothsavam, Laksha Deepothsavam.

Sri Lakshmi Sahasranama Archana, is performed on all Fridays and Amavasyas and is participated by a large number of Sumangalis. In addition Mandalarchana (48 day) is also performed during Aadi masam & Kaarthika Maasa.

 Pradosha pooja (Abhishekam & Sahasranama Archana) is performed to Lord Sri Lakshmi Narasimha in the evening, during sunset on Two Thrayodashies of each month.

In the prakara or the enclosure of the temple is a small cell enshrining the figure of the sage Atri. The figure of the sage was installed, as he was the gotra-rishi of the Maharaja. In the shrine of Ramanujacharya in the temple, there are three small stone figures of Paravasudeva, Anathasayana and Rajamannar (a form of Lord Krishna). The Navaranga (the central pillared hall) of Prasanna Krishnaswamy Temple has beautiful murals on its walls. The murals represent stories from Bhagavat the epic relating to Krishna.

These murals along with those in the Varahaswamy temple are exquisite examples of the distinctive and exceptional 19th century Mysore paintings. The sanctum sanctorum has a beautiful statue of Lord Krishna in the crawling posture, Ambegalu Krishna. The statue is made of chlorite schist. He has a butterball in his hand and a childish expression. This temple is known for its Kirshna Janmashtami celebrations. During the eight day celebration of Lord Krishna’s birthday a religious procession is organized from this temple.

Architecture

Krishnaraja Wodeyar III built the Prasanna Krishnaswamy temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna the founder of the Yadu dynasty. Construction of temple began 1825 and was completed in 1829. He presented the temple with about 40 bronze statues of Gods, Goddesses and saints. His name was inscribed next to the name of the statue. There is a statue of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III along with his wives with labels on their pedestals. The statue of the Maharaja is also worshipped.

There are around 40 bronze images of gods, goddesses, saints and sages in the temple. The figures of Krishnaraja Wodeyar along with his wives are still worshiped in the temple. Another shrine is dedicated to Sage Atri who was the priest of the Maharaja. There is another shrine with idols of Ramanujacharya, Paravasudeva, Ananthasayana and Rajamannar.

Modes of Travel

At a distance of 3 Kms from Mysore Railway Station & 2 Kms from KSRTC Bus Station, the Prasanna Krishnaswamy Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna is located inside the Mysore Palace towards the eastern end of main palace building. Built by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in 1829, the statue of the temple is made of chlorite schist. The idol of Krishna is in the crawling pose with butterball in the hand.

By Road

Mysore is 139kms to the south west of Bangalore. The state highway that connects these two cities is very well maintained. Travelling from Bangalore to Mysore by road is a pleasant experience and will take about 3hrs. The Karnataka Road Transport Corporation has excellent bus service to Mysore. There are ordinary buses, semi-luxury buses and luxury buses operated by the Government of Karnataka. Every half an hour there is a non-stop bus to Mysore from Bangalore Bus Station. Corporations of other states and private tour operators have buses plying to Mysore as well. All these facilities have made Mysore extremely accessible by road.

By Train

Mysore is connected with a number of trains to Bangalore. The super fast luxury train the Shatabdi Express connects Mysore to Madras. The quickest and most comfortable way to reach Mysore is via Bangalore.

By Air

The nearest airport to Mysore is Bangalore (139 km). All the domestic airlines in the country operate their flights to Bangalore from all the major cities in the country. Some international airlines too have flights to Bangalore. Bangalore is to have an international airport shortly.
