Introduction and History
Panchavati Prachin Gore Ram Mandir
Rama Seetha and Lakshmana are made of white marble and to distinguish it from the black icons of Kale Ram temple the temple is called Gore Ram Mandir.
Though Nashik and Panchavati are taken in one bracket, Panchavati is actually the area with the five banyan trees. The trees are numbered and we see Tree 1 near Parna Kutir. Parna kutir is the hut Lakshmana made for Rama and Seetha and on seeing its workmanship Rama gives Lakshmana a hug as narrated in Srimad Ramayana.Tree no 2 has the board for Seetha Gumpha .Tree no 3 is behind the auto stand and is thin compared to the others. Tree no 4 has Janardhan swami stall at its base.Tree no.5 has the Atharva Tourist Choice selling CD and Ice cream. Having spotted the trees we felt elated and happy to be in the place sanctified by Rama Seetha and Lakshman.
The temple for Lord Rama since 1782 is well maintained along with the unique Dashbhuja Siddhivinayak Temple and facing towards decent view of river Godavari.
The idol of Lord Rama as well as of Lakshmana and Sita are carved out of black stone, hence the temple got its name, Kalaram, meaning black Ram. At the entrance, there is an idol of Lord Hanuman, which is also carved out of a black stone. There is an impression of the footprint on a stone near an old tree which is thought to be the footprints of Lord Dattatreya. The temple is surrounded by several smaller temples such as the Vithal Temple, Ganapathi Temple, and Maruti Temple. Pilgrims also visit the Kapaleshwar Mahadev temple and Sita Gufaa near the Kalaram Temple. The festivals of Ramnavami, Dussehra, and Chaitra Padwa (Hindu new year day) are celebrated with much fanfare at the temple.
