Introduction and History in Brief
The temple complex includes one of the oldest trees of the country – Akshaya Vat. It is a sacred fig tree that has its mention in Hindu history. The legend has it, there was a time when Lord Narayana, for a moment, flooded the entire universe when he was questioned about his divine power by a sage called Markandeya. During this entire scene, the tree of Akshaya Vat was the only thing on the earth that was seen above water level. However, an amazing thing to know about this tree is that its roots have created one of the shrines in the temple. Today, not just the temple but pilgrims also worship this age-old tree with utmost devotion and ardour.
Patalpuri temple and the Undying Banyan, Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh in India, are both situated in close proximity with each other on the same site. Patalpuri temple is situated in the Allahabad fort and is one of the Holy Places in Allahabad. The Patalpuri Temple, Allahabad is one of the most famous and oldest temples not only in Allahabad but also in India. Undying banyan tree also referred to as the ‘Akshayavat’ is again regarded as a holy tree. About the Undying Banyan Tree it is said that this tree would stand firm even when the entire world gets destroyed. During the reign of Akbar, Akbar built the Allahabad Fort over the temple in the year 1583 and since then the temple lies within and under the fort. As per the Indian mythologies it is said that Lord Rama and Prahalada has also come to visit this old temple. Huan Tsang is also said to have visited the Patalpuri Temple and the Undying Banyan Tree at Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh in India. The Patalpuri Temple and the Undying Banyan has been stated in many ancient scriptures. Indian Mythologies state that people in the olden days use to throw themselves from the Undying Banyan Tree to attain salvation.

Amongst numerous Hindu pilgrimage sites in Prayagraj, Patalpuri Temple is considered to be the holiest shrine in the city. Located within the complex of Prayagraj Fort, earlier Allahabad Fort, Patalpuri is an underground temple which has great religious significance. As per the folklore, the temple was visited by Lord Rama. It is also believed that this popular shrine in Prayagraj was also visited by Hiuen Tsang – a Chinese traveller and writer.
Architecture
Patalpuri Temple is eighty four feet long and fifty feet wide. The roof, built of stone, rests on six and a half feet high pillars. There are seven rows of pillars. Each row contains twelve pillars. The middle row has double pillars. The total number of pillars is about a hundred. The main gate is on the west side. A grand statue of Goddess Kali at the entrance of Patalpuri Temple welcomes the pilgrims and devotees. From there, a flight of stairs leads to a long underground gallery. After going through the long passage, reach the sanctum sanctorum of the auspicious temple. The temple stands on large pillars. The walls of the gallery have several niches studded with sculptures of Goddess Annapurna and many other deities. The gallery leads to the ‘garbhagriha’ where beautiful idols of Ram, Sita & Laxman are installed and worshipped. Within the sanctum, there are several smaller shrines dedicated to different deities with their idols. There are idols of forty three deities within the temple. These deities are Akshayavat, Dharmaraja, Annapurna, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, Ganesh Gauri, Shankar Mahadev, Sage Durvasa, Sage Valmiki, Prayagraj, Baidyanath, Karti Swami, Sati Anusuya, Varun Dev, Dand Pani Mahadev, Kaal Bhairav, Lalita Devi, Goddess Gangai, Goddess Yamuna, Goddess Saraswati, Lord Narasimha, Surya Narayan, Jamwant, Guru Dattatreya, Banganga, Satyanarayan, Shanidev, Sage Markadeya, Gupt Dan, Tankeshwar Mahadev, Parvati, Veni Madhav, Kuber Bhandari, Arsnath-Parsnath, Sankat Mochan Hanuman, Koteshwar Mahadev, Ram-Lakshman- Sita, Nag Vasuki Dudhnath, Yamraj, Siddhivinayak and Sun God.

Timing
Since the temple of Patalpuri is located within the complex of Prayagraj Fort, hence, the timings of the shrines are also the same as the fort. The must-visit temple in Prayagraj stays open all the days of the week and can be visited between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
The months of the winter season are the best time to visit Patalpuri Temple in Prayagraj. Starting in the month of October, the season enjoys a cool and pleasant weather condition that allows travellers to explore the region to its fullest. The season ends in the month of February.
