Introduction and History in Brief

About 50 thousand devotees come to visit Pandupol Hanuman temple on the occasion of Lakkhi fair. Pandupol Hanuman Mandir is about 55 kms from Alwar city. The history of this Hanuman temple situated in the heart of Sariska dates back to the Mahabharata period. Legend has it that Bhima, during his exile in the Mahabharata period, hit the mountain with his mace, a blow from the mace broke the mountain and made way for the Pandavas.

Bajrang Bali had appeared to Bhima in Pandupol. According to an incident from the Mahabharata period, during this period, Draupadi had gone to take a bath on the river’s reservoir downstream of this valley as per her regular routine. One day, while taking a bath, a beautiful flower flowing in water came from above in the drain.

After bathing, Draupadi asked Mahabali Bhima to bring that flower, then Mahabali Bhima started moving towards the stream, searching for the flower. On going forward, Mahabali Bhima saw that an old giant monkey was lying comfortably with its tail spread. The path was completely blocked by the monkey lying down.

Due to the narrow valley here, there was no other way for Bhimsen to get ahead. Bhimsen said to the old monkey lying on the way that if you take your tail out of the way and put it on one side, then where did the monkey say that I am in old age? You go over it, Bhima said that I cannot go over it, you remove the tail. On this the monkey said that you look strong, you yourself should remove my tail.

When Bhimsen tried to remove the monkey’s tail, the tail could not be pulled from Bhimsen. Even after repeated efforts by Bhimsen, Bhimsen could not remove the tail of the old monkey and understood that this is not an ordinary monkey.

Bhimsen pleaded with folded hands to reveal his true form to the old monkey. On this the old monkey revealed his real form and introduced himself as Hanuman. Bhimsen called all the Pandavas there and worshiped the old monkey in a lying form. After this the Pandavas established the Hanuman temple there, which is today known as Pandupol Hanuman Mandir. Now a large number of devotees reach here every Tuesday and Saturday, the temple is the center of faith of the people.
