Introduction and History in Brief

Heritage buildings is one of the nation’s cultural wealth which is important for understanding and developing history, science, and culture, therefore its existence needs to be protected and preserved for the sake of strengthening national identity. Heritage buildings are usually found in a state of ruin, and some are found being buried under the ground. Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta / Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) is limited land area, but there are fair amount of cultural heritages. Cultural heritages found in DIY are pretty special as it comes from different periods (ages).

One of the relatively new findings of heritage buildings is Palgading Temple, which is only discovered in 2006. Palgading site was discovered accidentally on 21st of May 2006 while Bapak Slamet Sugiarto was planning to make the foundation of his house at that location. At the depth of 1.25m, Bapak Slamet found a statue and recognized it as the statue of Awalokiteswara and it antefix. Based on what is found, the Archaeological Heritage Conservation Centre Yogyakarta conducting a research in the form of excavation. After the excavation is done, they discovered that Palgading is a Buddhist temple as proven by the discovery of the stupa – shaped temple and Awalokiteswara statue. Palgading temple is administratively located at Palgading, Sinduharjo, Ngaglik, Sleman, and Yogyakarta. Palgading temple is located in the middle of residential areas, as astronomically located at the coordinate X 435029 and coordinate Y 9145941. The studies show that Palgading Temple is quite interesting as it is a complex consists of 4 different temples. The 4 temples are different in floor plans, architecture and size. Temple A is large monolith stupa. Temple B is a temple that has chambers. Temple C and D is only a foundation of the temple. Temple D has the sign that it is build up by wood. Palgading temple is also equipped with a fence and only the east side is discovered. The fence is made up of bare rock material (rock that haven’t shaped into block), which is compiled and stacked with land adhesive. The artefactual findings at Palgading site are fairly complete, interesting, and specific, this shows that this area has high significant value. In the nutshell, Palgading area has high and traditional culture as it already existed since ninth century AD.

Palgading Temple is one of the remaining cultural arts from the IX century AD. Several features of the temple are remaining until now such as a place of worship, which is a cultural heritage or culture resources. Therefore Palgading Temple is preserved and referred as a heritage building that has important values such as historically, scientifically, educational and cultural. Because the cultural heritage has important values so it deserved to be preserved and well protected, so it can be will benefits the present and the future. (Sumijati, 2004) This is in accordance with the mandate of Law No. 11 of 2010 Article 1. The current condition of the Palgading Temple is in the neighborhood, near to the paddy field, and bordered Klanduan River. In general, after the excavation process is done, the temple will located in a open area which is prone to be damaged, so protection and routine maintenance is necessary.
