Introduction and History
The temple is dedicated to Pakhangba also pronounced as Pagal Devta in and around the temple.
The Pakhangba is the supreme God. He is a man who can change his body to any form, like animals, and others as he is a powerful God. In certain sculptures, known as Kangla-Sa, at the citadel of the Kangla Palace in Imphal, there is a related type of creature represented with a short body. The sculptures are large and were built of brick, standing at each side of the northern gate. They have a similar head and four sturdy legs, but their body is shorter and bears more of a resemblance to a lion.
Pakhangba is a primordial serpentine dragon god and A religion. He is present in the heraldry of Manipur kingdom, originated from “Paphal” (ꯄꯥꯐꯜ), the mythical illustrations of the deity belonging to the traditional beliefs, preceding Hinduism in Manipur.Among the Meiteis, it is believed that the ancestor of one of the clans manifested himself as the Pakhangba.
This is also known as the Lainingthou Pakhanba Temple maintained by the local Manipuri community. Try to visit this place on Fridays. This is one of the oldest temples in Agartala which belongs to Old times of 1900.
The identity of the deity is often fused with “Nongda Lairen Pakhangba” (33 AD-154 AD), the first ruler of the Ningthouja dynasty, to sit on the throne of the Kangla Palace. The title Pakhangba was also used by other royalties in the history of Manipur.

It connects to most major metros of the country like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai but only via Kolkata and Guwahati. Airfares rise during the important festive seasons like Durga Puja (Oct-Nov), so if you’re traveling during that period, try and book your tickets in advance. Airlines like SpiceJet, IndiGo and Air India operate daily passenger flights from and to the city airport. The flight duration from Kolkata or Guwahati to Agartala is about one hour.
Nearest Airport: The nearest airport is the Imphal airport situated 570 km away. The Guwahati airport is a close second, at about 575 km.
Safety Suggestion: The most favorable time to visit Agartala is during the winters. Rainfall in this city is quite unpredictable, and the city even witnesses torrential rains followed by heavy floods, which could hinder your vacation plans. The much-awaited Dhaka-Kolkata bus service has reduced the distance and duration between Kolkata and Agartala by almost half, as buses now travel via the neighboring country, Bangladesh. Agartala is connected to Assam and other states via National Highway 44. Other well-known bus services that travel to and from the state capital city are KG Reliance Travels, Joy Ram Tours & Travels, Ezee Yatra Tours & Travels and Tripura State Transport buses.
Journey Suggestion: It takes about 24 hours to reach Agartala from Guwahati via Shillong (NH 44). Some of the rural areas are not safe to travel through after sunset, so keep that in mind. Road conditions are not the best in this locality, but it’s safe to travel to the city during the day.
