Introduction and History in Brief

The ancient temple is dedicated to Nakuleshwar Bhairav Temple, Kolkata – The eternal guard of Kalighat.

Kalighat in Kolkata is one of the four Adi (ancient) Shakti Peeth, the others being Bimala (inside  Jagannath temple of Puri, Odisha), Tara Tarini (Near Berhampur, Orissa), Kamakhya Temple (Near Guwahati, Assam) as per Kalika Purana. It is also One of the 51 Shakti Peeth recognised by other religious text. Kalighat is the temple of Goddess Kali, who is one of the ten Mahavidyas, and destroyer of evil. Nakuleshwar Bhairav, a form of Lord Shiva, is guarding the Goddess here.

The swayambhu Shivalinga is present in the center of the temple, and is surrounded by a marble alter. Deitis of Nandi and Ganesh are there and an image of Mount Kailash.

The current temple is small one, compared to the Kalighat Temple. It is the same temple built around 175 years ago, with some modifications having developed over the years (i.e., grills all around the otherwise open temple, marble alter, etc).

As per legends,Daksha performed a yagna inviting all except Lord Shiva and Sati (who was his daughter and married Shiva against his wishes). Sati still attended the yagna uninvited with the rights of a daughter. She was not received well by Daksha, who also insulted Shiva. Sati was unable to bear insults toward her husband and immolated herself. On learning about death of Sati, Lord Shiva was blinded in rage and started the Tandav Nritya (Dance of Destruction). To prevent the world from eminent destruction Lord Vishnu, on request of other Gods, used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut the corpse of Sati into 51 pieces which fell in various places of the Indian Subcontinent. These places are revered as Shakti Peeths, in which  Goddess Shakti is accompanied by her consort,  Bhairav (a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva) who guards the Shakti Peeth.

The Bhairav associated with Kalighat is Nakulish or Nakuleshwar Bhairav. It is said that the same Natha saint (Chowranga Giri) who founded the ancient Kali Kshetra (the temple which pre-dates current Kalighat) in the 15th century, found the swayambhu linga of Nakuleshwar Bhairav. For a long time his shrine was only a thatched hut, some distance to the north-east direction from the Kalighat temple. The Kalighat Temple was developed magnificently by the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family in 1809, but her consort had to wait for some more time for a temple. In 1854 (Bengali Year 1250 or বঙ্গাব্দ ১২৫০), a Punjabi merchant named Tara Singh, erected the present stone temple. At that time there were no walls and the roof was supported by pillars.

Every Monday (সোমবার), Full Moon (পূর্ণিমা), New Moon (অমাবস্যা) and Ekadashi (একাদশী or eleventh day of each lunar phase) special puja and bhog is organised here. Otherwise the temple is mostly empty and peaceful.
