It is believed that at this place the gods and goddesses, troubled by the demons Shumbh-Nishumbha, did penance for Mother Bhagwati. Then the mother appeared. Hearing about the terror of the demons, the mother’s body turned black with anger and she assumed a formidable form. Mother killed both the demons in the war. Mother got power from these 64 yantras.

According to local residents, it is also a legend that Mother Sati took second birth in the form of Parvati in this rock. At the same time, Raktabeej was killed by the mother near the Kalimath temple. His blood did not fall on the ground, so Mahakali spread his mouth and started licking his blood. Raktabeej Shila is still situated on the banks of the river. The mother had placed his head on this rock.

There is a pool in the Kalimath temple, which is covered with a silver plate/Shriyantra. This kund is opened on Ashtami in Shardiya Navratras. It is believed that when Mahakali did not calm down, Lord Shiva lay down under the feet of the mother. As soon as Mahakali stepped into Shiva’s chest, she calmed down and disappeared into this pool.
