Introduction and History in Brief

Lakulish Shiv Temple is located just 30 KM far of vadodra city in Kayavarohan village.The temple was rebuilt in 1955 and rebuilt by Yogacharya Swamiji Kripaluanandji Maharaja. The temple is located by lord Shiva.The temple is one of the sixty-eight ‘teerthas’ (Pilgrimage) of Lord Shiva as mentioned in the Shiva Purana. It is an important pilgrimage to Pasupatas (followers of Pashupati) as its home to Lord Shiva temple in Lakulisha avatar. Lakulish is considered to be the 28th birth of Shiva. The temple is also called Kasi of Gujarat.Kayavarohan lingam is formless and unique. Here the image of Shiva is that  of a meditating yogi,who holds a parchment in one hand and a citron in the other. Lord Shiva’s idol is made of black stone.On Mahashivarathri day thousands of devotees visit this Indian temple.

According to the legends, Lord Shiva took the incarnation of Lakulish in this temple. Lord Shiva took the form of a brahmin child so the place is known as Kayavarohan. Kayavarohan lingam represents the formlessness and uniqueness of Lord Shiva. The legend has it that during the invasion of Mahmood of Ghazni, the luminous jyotirlinga with Lakulish merged the light of all of the other 12 jyotirlingas into its form and disappeared. It is believed that Ichhapuri was the main place of pilgrimage in Satyuga, Mayapuri in Treta Yuga, Meghavati in Dwapar Yuga, and Kayavarohan is the main pilgrimage of the present Kali yuga.

Architecture

Kayavarohan temple is built according to the Indian tradition. The temple walls and pillars display fine carvings of nature. The walls also depict different aasanas and forms of Yoga. Shiva lingam itself is a manifestation of a meditating yogi in Shambavi Mudra. The temple also houses an underground meditation cave.The temple has also room facility for stay and food facility.Temple compound is very large and full of different trees.In temple compound Yogacharya Swamiji Kripaluanandji Maharaja run Lakulish Yoga University.many students take Yoga education here.

Kayavarohan popularly known as Karvan is the birthplace of Lakulish, the 2nd Century C.E. Shaivite revivalist, reformer and propounder of the pashupata doctrine.
