Introduction and History

Kanniga Parameswari Temple is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Pondicherry because of the high sacred significance the temple has in the hearts of devotees. On M.G. Road, the Kanniga Parameswari Temple is devoted to Goddess Shakti – the goddess of power in Sanatan Legends, Goddess Shakti is the manifestation Goddess Durga who is counted amongst the prime deities of Pondicherry. Besides the significance, the temple is also known for its unique architecture which boasts a perfect blend of both traditional Deccan architecture of India and French style of design.

Inside the temple complex, there is a large effigy of Lord Ganesha along with the presiding deity of the temple. Devotees from round the corner of the country come to this Hindu temple in Pondicherry to offer their prayers and to seek the blessing of the Almighty. At times, the temple remains thronged with a large pack of devotees, especially during the time of festivals like Navratri, Pongal and Deepavali. Along with the pilgrimage, the temple also hosts various Hindu marriage that goes round the year. Though the origin of the temple is unknown, yet, it is said that it the grandeur and the magnificence of the temple is still the same as it was at the time of construction, which is believed to be ages ago.

The beautiful architecture of Kanniga Parameswari Temple is a perfect mix of French and traditional Tamil design. The ceiling of the sanctum also boasts a traditional Tamil design. Along with that, the interior of the sanctum also includes motifs on the granite pillars. Moreover, the arched temple walls are beautifully adorned with the designs of Deities or Devas and various Asuras . Besides, the magnificent architecture of Kanniga Parameswari Temple includes stained glass panes that are typification of French shrines.

There are also small shrines for Ganesha, Lord Murugan and Brahma in the Temple premises.

Visitors can see other deities Statues here like Shiv Bhagwan, Lord Ganesha, Lord Ram – Maa Siiya, Shera wali Maa, Durga Maa and Krishna ji also.

Apart from structural beauty the Temple have got literally Shining environment with neat-clean conditions and hygiene protocols.

The environment is totally full of Spirituality and Peace.

Modes of Travel

By air:

Connecting Pondicherry with other parts of the country by air is the Chennai International Airport. One of the busiest airports in the country, Chennai airport is about 150 km away from Pondicherry and is well linked with not only prime Indian cities but also with international destinations. Flights operated by Jet Airways, SpiceJet and IndiGo connect Chennai with Indian cities, New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Pune and Visakhapatnam, among others. International carriers such as AirAsia, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Oman Air and Lufthansa have regular flights for Chennai from Kuala Lumpur, London, Hong Kong, Muscat and Frankfurt, to list a few. Once travellers reach the airport, they can hire taxis to reach Pondicherry.

By road:

One of the most cost-effective and convenient ways of reaching Pondicherry is via well-maintained motorable roads. A number of state and private buses ply at frequent intervals from most South Indian cities including Chennai (170 km), Bangalore (375 km), Coimbatore (380 km) and Mahabalipuram (100 km). Those travelling from Chennai are in for a visual treat as the East Coast Road (ECR) leading to Pondicherry is an extremely picturesque highway, having sand dunes one side and the sea on the other. Besides, there are several Bangalore to Pondicherry bus and Chennai to Pondicherry bus available at regular intervals.

By train:

Villupuram Junction railway station, just 37 km away, is the closest railhead to Pondicherry. The railway station is well linked to places like Chennai, Trichy and Madurai via an extensive rail network. After reaching the railway station, travellers can easily avail of buses and taxis service, which are easily available and extremely comfortable. The trains from Bangalore to Pondicherry are available on a regular basis and take around 9 to 10 hours.
