Introduction and History
The beautiful and old temple is dedicated to Maa Kaali.
The Maa Kali is worshipped by her devotees to seek blessings and offend themselves from all bad omens and dangers of death. The temple is believed to have existed since the reign of Maharaja Surchand in Manipur, long before the world war occurred. Popularly and commonly known by the locals as the name ‘Devi’ the temple has been serving prayers, offering pujas, celebrating festivals from time to time with the help from her devotees handled by its caretakers. The Meitei generally regard the caretakers of the Mandir by the name “ Pujari”. ‘Aaratis’ or daily praying sessions with holy chanting’s performed by the Pujaris twice a day, one by early morning and the other by evening when the dawn is almost home. Now, according to my personal interviews with the present caretakers, there are slight changes in the timing of their daily aartis. As of seasonal changes winter aartis are performed at 5 am in morning and 5 pm in evening while in summer time, 4 am in morning and 6 pm in evening.
Like other Kali Mai Temples across India, the Goddess wears a ferocious look, black in skin with her tongue out which marks as a symbol of victory against the devils and demons. Sometimes people claim the nudity of the Goddess as a matter of sexuality but in no point there should be any misconception. The “Maa” itself symbolizes the spirit to fight against all demons and in spite of its fearful look many devotees offer prayers and seek blessing. Considering the costumes worn by the statues here in this temple, the “Devi Maa”, is wrapped over by the traditional attires of Meitei, “Phanek” and white holy “Phijols”.
According to one of the Brahmin Pujaris, the present Kali Mai Mandir at Yaiskul is one of the three avatars of ‘Maa Kali’. The upper most portion of the Kali ( the Head) resides at Moreh while the bottom portion from waist to feet resides at Hiyangthang which is popularly known as the “Hiyangthang Lairenbi”. So, the middle portion i.e. from her neck up to the waist lies at the present ‘Kali Mai’ Mandir, popularly known as “Devi Maa”. The Mandir has a big community hall inside where timely feast are offered in concern with related ceremonies or a grand feast to the Goddess. One can have a very good view of the Goddess sitting there at the hall and have her Darshan. In Manipur, mostly people come to offer their newly bought bikes, cars and other vehicles to “Devi Maa” to seek blessings and offend from upcoming bad lucks and accidents. Other than this people also come for attending the Aartis or for other personal offerings and wishes.
As the Mandir is situated just nearby the Imphal city, one can easily come and pay a visit at any time of the day. The location of the temple just near the main road makes more than comfort. There are women vendors selling holy items such as garlands, fresh flowers and others just at the entrance gate. According to another Pujari, there are three main festivals celebrated inside the “Kali Mai Mandir”. The ‘Basanti Puja’ is celebrated basically within the month of October-November, commonly on one of the full moon days (purnima). The “Devi Puja” is celebrated at the time of the Hindu Festival Dipawali, by performing chanting’s and other prayer sessions. The last one is the “Kali Puja” celebrated during the time of the ‘Durga Puja Festival for five consecutive days. This is the time when most devotes comes to enjoy the festival with merry makings.
