Introduction and History

The beautiful temple is dedicated to Lord Gautam Buddh.

Dawangsari Temple is located near the Barong (Hindu) temple, because of the discovery of statues of Ganesha and Stupa of Dawangsari Temple with Buddhist-Hindu temple styles. It is estimated that this building was built around the 9th century (Ancient Mataram). Currently its condition is still in the form of scattered stones and several small stupas. Still intact. It still takes a long time for the reconstruction of the building and archaeological research more deeply. But for the time being the focus is still on completing the Barong temple project.

The temple is still in the excavation stage, the temple site is to the north of the barong temple. only separated by village roads. The shape of the temple in a number of stacking shapes in the form of stupas in large sizes. Hopefully the relevant offices will immediately restore this temple, so that it becomes a new tourist destination. happy historical tour.

The Dawangsari site is one of the sites in the Sleman Regency area. Sleman Regency according to Mundardjito (2002: 70) is an area that has quite a lot of sites.

Noted from the 17 sub-districts, there is not a single sub-district that does not contain archaeological sites. Administratively this site is located in Dawangsari hamlet, Sambirejo Village, Prambanan District, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region Province. Astronomically, this site is located at 110⁰29’45.45″ East Longitude and 07⁰46’28.46″ South Latitude. This site is located at an altitude of 180 meters above sea level. The Dawangsari Temple site is located in the form of a highland topography (hills) and is in a complex with the Barong Temple site, which is to the north.

Judging from the basic shape that resembles a stupa (although it is still a loose collection), the Dawangsari site is a heritage building that breathes Buddhism. Based on that opinion, this site is also often called the Dawangsari Stupa.

The Dawangsari Stupa site was first mentioned in the ROD in 1915. Meanwhile, Mundardjito briefly mentioned this temple. Mundardjito (2002: 85) mentions that not far from the site (Barong Temple), about 200 m to the northeast, a stupa-shaped andesite stone building has recently been discovered. The diameter is approximately the same as the Borobudur stupa. This Buddhist building site is named the Dawangsari Temple Stupa.

Complete mapping of this site was carried out by BPCB Yogyakarta (at that time it was still called the Archaeological Heritage Sanctuary) in 1986/1987. Archaeological research at the Dawangsari Temple Stupa site intensively began from 1987 to 1988/1989. on site data collection and rock search and rock grouping. While the research activities in 1988/1989 were collecting data on buildings that were still buried or being excavated. The results of these excavations are the appearance of the upper structure of the building (roof) up to the structure of the temple’s batur section, as well as the preparation of the eastern side of the stone foot batur experiment. Meanwhile, between 1989 and 2000 there was a vacuum. This is because the focus of activities is concentrated on the restoration of Barong Temple.
