Introduction and History in Brief
Brahmapurisvarar Temple, Thiruppattur is a Siva temple in Thiruppattur in Trichy district in Tamil Nadu (India).
It is one of the shrines of the Vaippu Sthalams sung by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Appar and Sundarar. This place was known as Pidavur.
The presiding deity is Brahmapurisvarar. The Goddess is known as Brahmanayaki.
Though this is a Siva Temple, it is famous for the Brahma shrine found in the temple.
The legends references recount Lord Brahma’s overwhelming pride as the Creator of the Universe. Lord Brahma felt that He was more prevailing than Lord Shiva – since He had the supremacy of creation.This sense of pride provoked Lord Shiva, who destroyed Lord Brahma’s Fifth Head, and also cursed Him that He would lose His power of creation.bramma temple thiruppatur brahma temple tiruppatur
After loosing his fifth head and all his powers, Lord Brahma realized his mistake since his privileged duty of creation was affected and so worshipped Lord Shiva at various places. During the course of His pilgrimage, Lord Brahma visited Thirupattur and worshipped Lord Shiva with a Shiva Lingam under a Magizha tree with water from the nearby tank, now called Brahma Theertham.tirupattur bramma temple brahma temple in tamilnadu
Brahmma got the creation rights from Lord Shiva. With a view to give Brahmma equal status, Lord Shiva gave him five heads as He had. Brahmma became proud of this position. Shiva took off one head. Brahmma also lost his creation job. Brhamma sought relief and apologized for his folly. Lord Shiva advised Brahmma to go to Tirupattur on Earth and worship Him with 12 Lingas (Dwadasalingas) and offered relief. As Lord Shiva changed Brahmma’s own bad destiny, he was advised to so in the case of devotees. As Brahmma worshipped Shiva here, the Lord is named Brahmapureeswarar. Mother Goddess is named Brahmmanayaki or Brahmma Sampath Gouri.
