Introduction and History
Bhartrihari caves is located around 5 kms away from Ujjain, again, on the banks of Kshipra river. Raja Bhartrihari, step brother of Vikramaditya, was once king of Ujjain. He renounced his kingdom and all worldly pleasures to live a secluded hermit life after being cheated by his wife, Pingala. There are two main caves with deceptively narrow entrances. Once inside, tourists are amazed to see what could qualify as a veritable palace. Bhartrihari meditated inside this cave for 12 tough years and it is believed that even Lord Indra came to fear him after such penance. There are a lot of statues of Indian Gods in each room supported by stone pillars.
Located near the banks of River Kshipra, on the outskirts of the city, Bhartrihari Caves are a popular tourist stopover. Supported by stone pillars, the cave has multiple rooms that house idols or images of Hindu deities. There is also a small temple inside that is pegged as a holy shrine for devotees of the Nath community. Assigned to the 11th century AD, the caves are a testimony to the rich cultural heritage of Ujjain.
Legend has it that the cave has been named after the stepbrother of King Vikramaditya, Bhartrihari, who meditated here for almost 12 years. Apparently, Bhartrihari was a poet and a great scholar, whose works include Nitishatak, Vairagyashatak and Shringarshatak. The caves have extremely narrow entrances, which can be very tricky to access. Every year, thousands of devotees come here to pay homage to the scholar; saints of the Nath community even pitch tents outside the caves and meditate.
As Temple concern, the Temple used to be full of devotees particularly during the Morning and evening during Aartis.
Visitors and devotees can see many statues of holy deities like LORD BRAHMA, LORD SHIVA ,LORD VISHNU AND MAA DURGA.
Devotees used to come to pray to Lord Ram Maa Sita ,Laxmanji and Hanumanji also.
