Introduction and History

Not far from Bugisan proliman there is a site called the Bugisan Arca Site. The Bugisan Statue site is not a site area that has been restored and is surrounded by a fence, but is only a residential area where there are scattered pieces of temples and statues in several corners. It seems that the area of this site has not been excavated and protected by BP3 (Balai Preservation of Archaeological Heritage) even though its location is quite close to the BP3 Office of the Special Region of Yogyakarta.

On the way to the Bugisan Statue Site, we passed the Yogya-Solo road. From the Bugisan proliman before Prambanan Temple, we took the south route through the village road and then turned west to a local community yard. In this resident’s yard, there are many scattered pieces of temple rock along with several statues collected side by side. In this place there is no information on the name of the site along with the archaeological site warning board as is commonly found in other archaeological sites.

We asked permission from the residents who live around the area to see the distribution of the existing temple rock pieces. There are 6 (six) statues similar to Buddha statues in the yard of the residents. If you look closely, each statue has a difference in the form of a necklace relief. It is not known exactly how many Buddha statues were found at the Bugisan Statue Site. Without care and supervision, some statues or temple stones could be stolen by irresponsible people. The Buddha statue is large and is estimated to be not much different from the Buddha statue at Borobudur Temple. However, the condition of the Buddha statues is no longer intact or damaged, some are missing in the head and others are missing in the hands and shoulders.

Next to a collection of Buddha statues there are several pieces of temple rock, some of which are the upper part of the temple entrance called Kala and Makara in the shape of a dragon’s head. The condition of the Kala and Makara rocks is still intact and the relief carvings are clearly visible. Looking at some pieces of Kala, it is certain that the Bugisan Arca Site was once a temple area that had several temple buildings because a stone with Kala carvings was at each entrance to the temple.

On the roadside of the people’s house yard, there are several plain rocks of the temple and temple rocks engraved with flower reliefs which are thought to be part of the foundation and walls of the temple. In the yard of another house, several pieces of plain stone were also found and another that looked like a piece of a temple stupa. The discovery of statues resembling Buddha statues and rocks resembling pieces of stupas can be estimated that this temple site includes a Buddhist temple site.

The search for scattered temple pieces does not end here. We were told by local residents that there were several pieces of the temple, including a Kala rock between the gravestones of the cemetery. I have not received an explanation or reason why some of the temple areas have been converted into public cemeteries. Or the temple rocks are said to have been deliberately moved to the vacant land before being used as a burial site. Finally I traced the pieces of the temple in the grove of bamboo trees to the west of the cemetery. There are scattered pieces of the temple, of which there are several pieces of the temple that make up the stupa.

When observed carefully, the distribution of pieces of temple rock at the Bugisan Arca Site is quite wide in the Bugisan hamlet. The spread of several pieces of the temple in several residents’ yards and cemeteries can be estimated as the size of the temple is quite large and wide. However, the condition that there are only a few pieces of temple rock plus a shift in the location of the temple rocks, whether intentional or unintentional, is quite difficult to prove how extensive the description of the temple site is in this place.
